Review: The Map by William Ritter

The Map by William Ritter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Abigail hopes that her birthday will slip by unnoticed and uncelebrated, but her employer, detective of the supernatural R. F. Jackaby, has other plans. Using magical party crackers that teleport the pair to unknown destinations in time and space and a cryptic map that may lead to a forgotten treasure, Jackaby intends to give Abigail what he considers to be the best gift of all–adventure. Abigail and Jackaby must tame an enormous (and carnivorous) rabbit, defend a castle, and master a dirigible if they want to find the treasure and get back to New Fiddleham alive.

The Map was short, but adorable and exciting. It takes place after the timeline of the first book, but you don’t need to read that one for this (still, you might as well, seeing as it is quite entertaining and you get references for a few mentioned characters). I haven’t read anything after Jackaby, so, so far I can say that this one adds to the mythology of the series, too, regarding Jackaby’s seer powers and the visibility of the magical world to Abigail. It is an adventure as they figure out the clues in an old map that he gets as a birthday present to her, because he knows how much she loves exploring. There are some goblins, an evil garden, a giant hare and loads of amusing dialogue. A wonderful addition to the series.
