review 1: Full five stars...no ambiguity whatever! This is a graphic non-fiction combining the manga like art work of Emmanuel Guilbert and the edited photographs of the late photographer Didier LeFevre describing LeFevre's odyssey from Pakistan, thru Afghanistan and back again during the conflict between the mujahideen and the Soviet Union while on assignment with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders.) Under the leadership of a phenomenal woman identified only as 'Juliette,' A large caravan crosses many, many borders...national, cultural, geographic... to bring personnel, equipment and supplies to support MSF hospitals serving refugees from the fighting and establish a new hospital in a region under frequent Russian air assault. LeFevre's job is document the effort... more. The physical ordeals of this expedition stun the mind. You need to remember that this is not fiction. The material sparseness of the landscape and the ability of the Afghans to survive in it seem utterly alien...perhaps they are...perhaps understanding why would help us cope with the aftermath our long and unproductive war. For me it's difficult to encompass the magnitude of what Doctors Without Borders attempts...and how much they can actually achieve. LeFevre's narrative makes the characters, European and Afghan, good, bad, saintly or evil into vivid human presences. Guibert has followed up on the story years later as well as circumstances in turmoil could permit. LeFevre suffered severe health problems as a result of his ordeals, but continued working...often in obscurity...until he died at a relatively young age. As a wannabe photojournalist whose apogee was an energetic little weekly newspaper, I am humbled by this record.
review 2: Excellent and artfully crafted book. Photographer Didier Lefèvre's account of his travels alongside Doctors without Borders' mission into Russian-invaded Afghanistan in the 80s. Hugely impressive, not just for a soon-to-be employee of the Dutch association of Doctors without Borders. A must-read for all to understand and appreciate what medical professionals are willing to go through to help others who are affected by war and natural disasters. less
