review 1: This story of the author and her husband's participation in the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge road rally, driving a 1940 LaSalle two door Coupe. Despite her fantasies of exploring China, Mongolia, etc. along the way, it turns out that it's days of driving all day except when they are forced to stop to repair the car. In spite of all the discomfort involved, she does love spending the time alone with her husband, and after decompressing from the Rally they start planning other road trips--without the other 300 cars this time! She's an entertaining if somewhat self-deprecating writer, and I'd be curious to read about their adventures in Patagonia (their next expedition after the Rally).
review 2: I enjoyed reading this travelogue of a road rally in 2007 from Pe... moreking to Paris in a 1940's LaSalle. Some travel stories have me jealous of the adventures of the author. This type of travel is something is something I would never want to do, but it was an interesting read. Dina Bennett has a friendly, natural storytelling voice combined with honesty about her tendency to worry (I'd be worried too if I was driving an old car that keeps breaking down across the Gobi desert!). less
