review 1: Though the adventure had some highlights, the writing was rather dull. Also, there seemed to be something disingenuous about the feat. While I have no doubt the journey was risky and required both physical and mental endurance, the fact that Stafford and Cho often took a boat downriver to the nearest city for some recovery nights in hotels before backtracking and walking the same segment removes some of the danger and tension from the story. Stafford spends much of the second half of the narrative describing his worry that his passport had expired and he might be sent back to England. Since Stafford frequently took "vacations" from his journey, why would going back to England for a few days, a few weeks, or even a year, and cause any concern, especially since the journ... moreey was not a continuous one anyway? For a much better story of jungle survival, I would recommend Yossi Ghinsberg's well-written Jungle.
review 2: I thought the book was okay. It is an incredible feat, and though I am not sure I would be able to do it any better, it seemed like he was complaining a lot. I also thought there were some inconsistencies. If you are low on money, maybe you shouldn't invite people to walk with you when you don't need them. Anyway, like I said it was a great accomplishment but sometimes he came off as a bit whiny.. less

This book should have been interesting. It's a shame it was not. The story's poorly told. Boring.

Ed Stafford's achievement is mind numbingly phenomenal but he should not attempt writing again.
