review 1: Young's eye and hand are so skillfully released in this volume, which tells the story of his early life and family, especially of the house built by his father in Shanghai. Small glimpses into his early artistic expressions emerge, but the book focuses on capturing the soil from which he grew as a person. His mixed media constructions and deft hand in creating elevations, maps and more is very satisfying. A great model for a unique way to tell a life story. Probably not ideal for younger children or readers, but great to look at anyway, especially with its fold-out pages.
