review 1: Young's eye and hand are so skillfully released in this volume, which tells the story of his early life and family, especially of the house built by his father in Shanghai. Small glimpses into his early artistic expressions emerge, but the book focuses on capturing the soil from which he grew as a person. review 2: Caldecott medalist Ed Young weaves together art and prose in this picture book memoir of a childhood spent in wartime Shanghai. As the war continues on, the large walled home his fat

His extraordinary illustrations are complemented by vivid descriptions of his unique childhood. Written as a tribute to his father, this book will appeal to both parents and children. less
