review 1: The concept as explained by the author on a talk show i saw.. is a great sounding idea.. make math interesting.. keep it simple so to speak.. then more folks will want to study it. So i bought a Kindle copy. And .. Well.. it struck me as kinda 50/50 hitting the concept. Interesting background stories.. but.. as the stories progressed.. the math became more complex.. and so my interest waned.. and i didn't finish reading it, and dropped out. Just like i dropped out of high school due to boring algebra, and trigonometry.. suffering more and more .. wondering why is this stuff necessary? Can't they make it more *interesting* than this..?Good effort, but no cigar... too bad.

... moreet me wrong, I love symmetry as much (maybe more!) than the next guy but this book didn't do it for me. It's aimed at a general audience, but I thought the explanations of group theory were clunky. Maybe formal classwork in abstract algebra has biased me. Maybe it's the best lay-person explanation for group theory -- I certainly can't formulate a better one. I also couldn't deal with a book-length lay-person treatment of it in these terms.. less
