review 1: My Gentle Barn is a memoir with a bit of a rough start, much like its author. Ellie begins with her childhood, which was one of discouragement, particularly of her love of animals. That lonely little girl would, after some rough patches as a young adult, rebound with a lot of help from some of the animals she'd rescue, first dogs then eventually a goat who would be pivotal in helping found the Gentle Barn. The story is the author's but the animals are very important, to say the least, and their stories and impact on Ellie are sprinkled throughout. Through it all Ellie is inspired to bring animals who have had a rough time together with youngsters who have also had a rough time. As the young ones meet animals in a respectful manner they find healing often times. The story w... moreas compelling and the conversational writing made it easy to just breeze through. Very enjoyable and inspiring!
review 2: Arguably, the best of human nature can perhaps be exemplified by those that help the most abused and downtrodden of creatures - both two- and four-legged. I nominate the patron saint of this group to be author Ellie Laks, who writes of many of the rescued animals (and children) who have found salvation in her sanctuary Gentle Barn. Laks' story of her own salvation, after a difficult childhood and a tangle with substance abuse, is also moving and uplifting and attributable to her relationships with animals. What a winner of a memoir! less
