review 1: Gentle Barn itself deserves five stars plus for the extraordinary work they have done since Ellie Laks rescued her first animal. And I would recommend the book to any animal lover. Her path from a determined but virtually penniless warrior for animals to the skilled and confident manager of an initiative that transforms lives was not an easy one. Anyone with less resolve would have given up along the way. Laks stuck with it, not an easy path for her nor for those closest to her. She never hesitated to take on the hardest cases, the most abused, diseased or injured animals.I can recommend the book without reservation, though I was disappointed by the writing. With stories so compelling, I expected the book to be more gripping. The book could have soared but was curiously fl... moreat. Still, Laks is an extraordinary woman, caring and compassionate. We need more people like her, who will go to any length to protect our non-human relatives.
review 2: 3.75 starsThis is what happens when I stay in on weekends to save up the money for fat cat's surgery, I read an almost 450 page book in an afternoon and want to save all the animals...As to the book itself, the writing was reminiscent of a 5th grader's essay or short story, very elementary. But the overall message of saving hurt, neglected, and abused animals is one everyone should get behind and support. less
