review 1: I really enjoyed Elna Baker's voice. I would definitely read more of her work or see her set. I'm fascinated with religion and learned more about Mormonism from this memoir than anywhere else. It was refreshing to read someone who isn't apologetic about their faith, but isn't an apologist either. Elna exists dually, which is really, really hard. One note: this book would definitely be triggering for folks struggling with body image/weight loss, and I'm not someone who uses trigger warnings often. Baker is really funny and painfully honest with the reader, and that involves a lot of not-body-positive material. Who am I to ask her to change her perspective on her experience? But it's definitely something to be aware of.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. The m
... moreaps and lists made it like reading Elna's journal. She is a funny, likable narrator and I laughed out loud at several points. It felt like I was talking to my best friend. I imagine this is what her memoir would be like, if she ever actually writes it. As someone who attended many dances with my Mormon friends, I found her descriptions hilariously accurate. Elna also gives some insight into the Mormon faith both seriously and jokingly. My favorite quote is "being a Mormon is a lot like joining the mob." I know this is true :-) less
