review 1: I enjoyed this book and read it pretty quickly as it was rather short. While it wasn't the best book I've ever read, I do feel it left the reader with important messages about autism. The book has great morals, and I can realize and recognize the book for what it is. The message was important there even if the story wasn't that great or engaging. I can see how it might have been great for some people, but I didn't realize it had religious aspects in it, and so many! I'm an atheist, and for good reason, but I don't mind a few religious or bible references if it enhances the story. The reason I gave this book 3 stars was because there was just too many! It doesn't even make sense to me, every single atheist I've ever known has always been in perfect health, of sound mind, an... mored is happy in at least one aspect of their life (love, career). But many people who are really religious either have health problems, have gone through a really horrible tragedy or know someone who has disabilities and have had more divorces than people who aren't religious and who don't have that stigma of "it's against my religion to divorce." If there really was a god, why would he give the people who believe in him these lives full of heartache and struggles, yet the atheists live fulfilling, healthy lives? It seems to me god should punish the people who don't believe in him instead of those who do, yet it's the other way around .So yea, I don't believe in god, and frankly it was quite annoying that she believed so strongly. She wanted a kid so bad and god rewarded her with a disabled kid and a husband who couldn't cope. So that part got on my nerves, and I found myself glazing over these parts of the book and not being able to follow or pay attention. I don't think I would recommend this book to anyone unless they specifically want to read a memoir about the struggles of autism and then only if they want a religious aspect with it. Overall, I was kind of disappointed with this book, and disappointed in general because it's already almost May and I haven't read any AMAZING books yet this year, which I've just been hoping and hoping to read by trying to read books that only have amazing descriptions at the back.
review 2: Despite Emily's agonizing experiences raising a son with special needs, she shares with insight, compassion and humor. Through stories of encounters with friends and strangers from a parking lot to a car dealership, we see how the world and people's hearts are enlarged by embracing people who are challenged or different. This is a story about the value if realtionships -- marriage, parents, grandparents, friends, and strangers. God's hand and purposes are apparent in the life and circumstances of this family though the faith story here is not predominant. I enjoyed this refreshingly honest but joyful look at how disability can affect families and communities. less
