Review of James Rollins’ Latest Novel, The Demon Crown

The focus of my blog is to review book series and not individual novels. But writers are going to continue writing novels within a series even after I have done my review, so I plan on reviewing the individual novels as they come into circulation.  James Rollins has recently added book #13, The Demon Crown to the Sigma Force series.

My husband likes to watch shows on Animal Planet and every so often they promote one of their shows, Monsters Inside Me. At the end of the commercial they show a squirming larvae being held with a pair of forceps and the comment from my husband is always, “Ohhh, I wish they would quit showing that”. There is something about flesh-eating parasitic organisms that brings out feelings of horrifying revulsion in most of us which leads us to James Rollins’ latest novel, The Demon Crown. Killer wasps and parasitic monsters abound in this latest saga of the Sigma Force series which makes it one of the creepiest and most enjoyable addition to the series.

James Rollins has a way of taking science one step beyond the extraordinary. Even though the storylines may seem highly implausible, there is a certain element of reality. Rollins gives us a chance to see what it would be like to be the victim of parasitic wasps which truly exist in nature, but their victims tend to be other insects and not humans. The Demon Crown not only gives a fun filled ride but also makes us a bit wiser.
