review 1: We have a neighborhood couple who are also doing edible forest gardening! Lucky us. One of the couple told my partner that his partner was overwhelmed and uncertain about the whole thing and this book was the one she found most reassuring and helpful. It was recommended as less textbookish / more narrative bookish. This is mostly a memoir, partly a manual. This is not an introductory book to edible forest gardens. While it's not a how-you-do-it, it's a how-I-did-it. I enjoyed this very much having read other technical books by the same author and having seen him on DVD. It's wonderful to hear how much these guys messed up in their garden! I've learned a lot from his account of their implementation of yard-scale polyculture. I feel more and more comfortable and confident in ... moremy ventures. The author states that he would never have thought that such a book would be useful or interesting -- he was approached by his publisher with the idea. Good call, Chelsea Green. It makes his other books SO much richer, so much more approachable, so much more useable; permaculture books are garden tools and it helps to be shown how to use them.
review 2: Another one bites the dust. It is very much more a manual than a story. If you are looking for an entertaining story this is not it. It is not for us common gardeners who love our beans, tomato, and broccoli. For someone with a basis of permaculture knowledge I'm am sure you would enjoy this book. The writers are very knowledgeable. A book of this nature should have more pictures for the detailed lists of plants they refer to. less
