review 1: One of the most compelling books I've read. It's real. And it shows the triumph of the human spirit. Erma Steppe endured horrors that are unimaginable, yet she is a survivor and an inspiration. This book should be a movie. It also would be an excellent teaching tool in psychology and sociology programs, and it is essential reading for school teachers who deal with problem children and the crisis of bullying.
review 2: I could relate to this story having spent time in a childrens home and having the 'black dog' accompany me most of my life. This is a harrowing read written from the heart. Don't expect a well written book in the literary sense, which, strangely adds to understanding the terrible and redeeming experiences that life can throw at you. The guilt one
... more suffers when it's not your fault comes through on every page. For me , Erma's story is honest, brave, and in the end, a triumph. less
