review 1: This book is written using very absurd humour. It started with chapters of laugh out loud material but for some reason (maybe I was used to the humour, maybe the author ran out of steam) half way through it was funny but not as funny and a few sections felt like very forced humour. Which is a shame, because I felt it was going to be one of my all time fav books but it turned out to be just a very enjoyable book. The absurd humour that Eugene employs is the type I love. When it is at its best he is mocking the world, and himself, with over the top advice to be a better person. I think the reason some of the earlier chapters worked better is because he dropped in real observations from his life or from his opinions. the latter chapters on politics and money making were subje... morects he didn't have as much of an emotional connection to so the humour wasn't as true. As an aside - the illustrations peppered throughout this book are beyond horrible. He thanks his (I assume) girlfriend for doing them which leads me to wish he had a more artistic girlfriend. They aren't even bad in the way you can laugh at how bad they are - just bad that they look like a teenager with no artistic sense did them at the last minute for a business class. It is also a waste because most of them just repeat a joke he makes in the text. He could have used them to punch up the joke or add new jokes with visuals. Overall a 3.5 star book. Some parts are 5's and some more like 2's. But I recommend it if you want a laugh. It is clear that Eugene is VERY humourous and I love his sense of humour.
review 2: This is very light reading, modeled after flashy self-help books, full of Mirman's pithy humor. Great for reading when you are stuck in a very unpleasant place or at least tedious errands, like while stuck in line at the DMV or while eating lunch at your soul-sucking job, trying to lift your spirits so you don't finalize that fucking draft of a suicide note you keep on Google Drive so you can print it at your convenience in case your boss gives you that same fucking talk about productivity again... It's a good book. less

Not bad. I enjoyed the more "personal" essay bits.
