review 1: Fannie Flagg knows me. Well, she doesn't KNOW me, but she does know me. We must be cousins somewhere along the Alabama bloodline. When I read one of her books, I feel as though she's called me on the phone for a long overdue connect. Since we know so many of the same people, and share so many life experiences, it's no wonder I hang up the phone and smile, so glad she made the time to chat and share. I loved this book. I love all of Fannie Flagg's books. As a writer, I'm well aware that it isn't easy to create characters who step off the page and into your life, or to tell a good story with finesse, but Lord-oh-Lord, Flagg sure does make it look easy.
review 2: 2.5 stars (I rounded up)I grew weary of the protagonist, Maggie, an aging former Miss Alabama. At firs
... moret I thought the story was a bit quirky but soon realized it was just too far-fetched for my liking - a midget; a ninety+ year old female office manager who only wore purple (because it was "her color") and had dyed her hair purple to match; a black compulsive overeater with political ambitions who had a lesbian affair with a white Jewish woman; a skeleton dressed in full Scots regalia in the attic; etc., etc. etc. The character I found most likable and interesting was Hazel, the one who had died before the beginning of the story. Hmmm ...Readers are left with the message that "you never know what's right around the corner and you should wait to find out, because it might be grand!" For those of us who loved "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" - this isn't that book. less
