review 1: I love to read auto-biographies of famous athletes and learn about their journey. Gabrielle Douglas's was one of my favorites. It's amazing how even the most famous people, start out from scratch and have the same difficulties we do. Gabrielle didn't really have such an easy childhood. Her family didn't have all the money to spare on expensive gymnastics, and her siblings even sacrificed for her dream. They all knew she would grow up to be something great, and were willing to give up some of their own activities. Throughout her training journey, she had to leave her family, and work tirelessly mainly on her gymnastics. Regardless of the bad days, she kept working. In the end all the tears, blood, and determination paid off. She won her gold-medal, and gained the respect o... moref main world class gymnasts, and young gymnasts across the country.
review 2: Grace, Gold & Glory is a story that reveals Gabriella Douglas's life, it reveals her struggles, fears, concerns, dreams, and thoughts. After reading this book, I feel the authors purpose is to show how Gabby grows up, and how she never gives up on her dream throughout her life. This book is a autobiography. Although this book was written by Gabby, it was also written with Michelle Burgord; making the book an autobiography. The books point of view is told from the olympic gold medalist, Gabriella Douglas. Gabby and Michelle describe the book with fear, and adventure. Every time Gabby went to a new competition, her heart filled with fear. She was scared that she might fall, hurt herself or not get a good enough score, that she might not move on to the next event. The book was also adventurous. Gabby was not afraid to travel to a new country to compete or even move away from her family, to train at a more competitive gym. A part from the book that I really enjoyed is how talented Gabby was when she was little. The following is described: "Unless you've been vacationing on Saturn, you've probably heard that my older sister, Arielle, a former gymnast, showed my how to do a perfect cartwheel when I was just three and she was just nine. The two of us also practiced all kinds of skills, aka tricks: spider-walk handstands, the splits, bridges, and back walkovers. In fact, after mirroring Arielle's moves, I went solo: I taught myself how to do a cartwheel on one hand. That's when my sister noticed I had a special gift"(24-25). I also took gymnastics when I was little. I can make the connection with Gabby, because we both were little gymnasts. I can understand Gabby's pressure when she is doing routines, because it is like anything else that makes someone nervous; like taking a test or performing anything in front of anybody. If it was not for her sister Arielle, Gabby would not be who she is today. Arielle also helped Gabby fulfill her dreams by giving up her own sport. I would recommend this to any student that is a girl, that is interested in gymnastics or Gabriella Douglas. less
