review 2: I used to read a lot of author biographies just because I loved to learn about the life exp
... moreerience that influenced a writer's work. I have not read a biography in a really long time. I am giving this five stars because it is exhaustive. It is so exhaustive, that I am about 100 pages shy of finishing it (it's 544 pages total), but I borrowed it from my local library and have run out of renewals. I am on page 432. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has just won the Nobel Prize for literature. I intend to check this out again and finish it a later date. If you're a die-hard fan of Gabo, this is worth reading. It is on the dry side, lots of facts, but the man has a fascinating life story that feeds his work. It has been a joy to get some deeper insight into the books of his that I have read: Leaf Storm and The Autumn of the Patriarch. On my to-read list: One Hundred Years of Solitude and Living to Tell the Tale. I think it will be fascinating to read Gabo's take on his life after reading this biography, i.e. someone else's take on his life. I have put off reading One Hundred Years of Solitude, probably just because EVERYONE HAS READ IT, lol. I am always looking for gems that haven't been discovered yet, and One Hundred Years of Solitude is not one of those. But after reading his other works and most of his biography, I am pretty hooked on Gabo, so I will be reading more. less
