review 1: I really enjoyed the first third of this - the author has some witty lines and he's good at humorous interaction with his friends. But when he starts to philosophize, he's not so good - and he does it an awful lot. The second and third adventures in the book didn't work as well as the first for me. He's trying to show that the new travel writing can leave out a sense of place entirely; I wasn't convinced - I was left wondering what the point was. But his writing can be great in places. I think the book needed a more rigorous edit.
review 2: It took me about 70 pages to get into this. And for those first 70 pages, I was very close to giving up. The writing was just too...pretentious, maybe? But for whatever reason I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. It's both a
... more travel memoir and the story of a man trying to heal his relationship with his father--it feels like a masculine version of Eat, Pray, Love. The danger of this book, for me, is that it gets me wanting to take a long long walk. Just like after I read Wild I contemplated hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. After reading this book, I want to walk across Spain. less

Hilarious but genuine too. Best account of Camino De Santiago I've read yet.
