review 1: Well written, highly readable account by the main character's son, a journalist. I met Zhanna Dawson, the indomitable survivor, who signed the book for me. She is still a feisty, strong woman. Her story is vividly told and offers some insights into the Ukrainian experience during the Nazi invasion. A very good read that would be good for young readers as an introduction to this historical era, it is honest but not too graphic.
review 2: For years I have studied the Holocaust, the Final Solution. My interest was heightened as a 17 year old when I had the the privilege of studying piano with a Latvian survivor, a former concert pianist. I knew only that she met her husband in a camp after the war. Since then I have read countless personal stories of surv
... moreivors, rescuers, and memoirs, yet I never forget the quiet, middle-aged woman teaching piano in MI, in the 1960's, and I wonder. In this remarkable story, Greg Dawson takes the shroud off of his mother's and aunt's lives. He discovers the untold story of her harrowing experiences at the hands of the Germans during WWII and he carefully shares it with the reader. He includes his mother's own words, allowing her to speak directly to us. The music of the German composers, Beethoven, Bach, and Brahms, surround the story in horrible irony. The girls survive, just as the music survives. Beauty outlasted the Naziis. This is a story of survival and of music. Beautiful. less

Interesting but not compelling. Could have used a better editor.
