Back in February, I went to The Pitt and discovered Fresh Revolution – a food truck with an ethos of “delicious, locally sourced, worldly minded street food”. At the time I had a pork belly burger and praises it for the tenderness of the pork and “the friendliest staff”.
Eight months on and they’ve just taken over the kitchen at The Last Word Saloon on St Stephen Street in Stockbridge. I was invited down to their launch night earlier this week*.
We were very warmly welcomed by Emily – wife of the chef and driving force Ronan. Often these launch nights can be awkward but we were immediately made to feel welcome by Emily and ushered to the bar to get a complementary cocktail. I was driving but Debbie (a friend and wonderful new blogger who you can check out here) sampled the Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Ginger Ale.
The Last Word is the kinda pub I like – small, cosy, dark and good music. The perfect winter pub. It seems to be a recurring theme at the moment but these lovely little places are not conducive to good photos so I’ve done the best I can by candle light!
The Buffalo House is American BBQ style cooking – homely and comforting.
We sampled the brisket sliders first – the meat melted in the mouth.
Up next were the gravy fries. All over Instagram I’ve seen people talking about that gravy. I don’t know what Ronan does to it to make it like that but it’s proper gravy. I could have eaten about five portions of the fries.
Next up we tried the ‘slaw and beans. The beans are smoky and deeply flavoured with barbecue. The ‘slaw was so moreish. We actually just sat and ate it straight from the pot on its own. I think it was delicately spiced with chipotle.
The surprise of the evening, however, came from the vegetarian option – a jackfruit slider. You’d barely even know it wasn’t meat – it’s the same kind of consistency as pulled pork or beef and this had another level of spicing to it that the beef didn’t. The fruit really seems to absorb the flavourings well.
The Buffalo House is in kitchen residence Tuesday – Friday 5.30 – 10pm until Christmas so you need to get your butts down there. The prices are very reasonable, the staff amazing AND they take dogs.
Now, go go go!
