review 1: 3.5 stars. When Father-Mucker started, I was sighing a lot and prepared to be annoyed by a hipster-ish, liberal dad being snarky about parenting. And then, Olear won me over with this novel. The pop culture references for parents of young children were spot on. The novel's depictions of the daily life transactions of an at-home parent -- from play dates to bedtime routines to meals -- rang true to me. Through his main character, a stay-at-home dad whose name I forget because I finished this book two weeks ago, Olear shares reflections on parenting that are true, funny, sometimes heartbreaking, and mostly hopeful.
review 2: A modern-day and funnier/more ironic Revolutionary Road in that it focuses on well-off suburban dwellers and their fascination with the
... moreir (our?) low-grade soap operas. Definitely captures the quiet desperation of being a father in a way that few books do More suspenseful and better-written than I'd expected. Might have given it 5 stars but thought the way he got back to the "Father Mucker" title was very contrived. less

A fun and amusing read about parenting young children from a SAHD perspective.

Liberal and profane . . . but still good for a chuckle.

Stay-at-home dad angst, sort of refreshing.
