review 1: This book provides a glimpse into life in Sudan before the horrors began and then explores the heinous evil that man is capable of when fueled by hate. Within the midst of all the atrocities, there are incredible acts of courage that speak to the spirit. I enjoyed reading about Halima's childhood as it reinforces how children are children regardless of culture. It also highlights how the basic desires and needs of people are the same. As the book progresses, it becomes really hard-hitting. It's hard to understand how anyone can hate another human being to the extent that the the Arabs hated the Africans within Sudan. But it's also encouraging to know that there are those that stood up against these atrocities at the risk of everything and did the right thing. The Darfur e... morexperience should be a wake-up call for any society that continues to allow hate of one group of people to endure.
review 2: I really liked this book. She tells the story of her life growing up in a small village, going off to school to become a doctor, and how her life was impacted by the Darfur crisis. I find reading stories like this to learn about a political situation is easier than reading a full-fledged history book, which can sometimes be dry. However, I kind of wish she had included more political information in the book, so that we had a better sense for the various factions and issues involved, and how she viewed them. Overall though, this was an excellent and heartbreaking read. less
