review 1: While reading this book, I am suddenly struck with the desire to move to a small remote village and try my hand at self-sufficiency. Haines, Alaska seems pretty darned cold, but they still manage to have a growing season, so maybe it's a chillier, wetter version of Monterey (except for the long, dark winters). I first heard of Heather Lende when I subscribed to Woman's Day, (she makes Alaska sound so inviting) and chanced upon this memoir. It's the story of her serious injury (she got run over by a truck) and her recovery and other life-in-Alaska stuff. She is optimistic but the book on a whole is a bit of a downer. Lende is an obituary writer and a hospice volunteer so there are a lot of tales of decline and death, but there's also a lot of spirituality and faith, ki... morend of reminiscent of Anne Lamott.
review 2: I found this book just as enjoyable as her first. Very personal and actually quite funny. Her triumph over a bad bike accident is just amazing and she tells it with warmth and heart. Yes, it is full of religion (after all FAITH is in the title), but I didn't find that off-putting. I love that she took the title from her mother's last written note to her father. Her approach is very down to earth and her writing style is so comfortable. Very interesting stories about her town of Haines, Alaska and her place in the community. less

One of my favorite authors of "this is my life...." type of writing. Makes me want to visit Alaska.
