review 1: I very much enjoyed this interesting and thoroughly researched portrait of the four grand duchesses of the House of Romanov. Helen Rappaport concentrates on the day-to-day lives of the sisters, rather than reminding us of their eventual ghastly fate. She uses a multitude of sources, including letters, memoirs and diaries kept by people who knew the family, which provides a fleshed-out portrait of both the sisters and their immediate circle. Their parents, Czar Nicholas and the Czarina, Alexandra also feature prominently, as does the little haemophiliac son and heir, Alexei and, of course, Rasputin. The girls had a strained, difficult relationship with their mother, who was so often ill that she did not mix much at all with Russian high society, so the people hardly knew he... morer. Czar Nicholas was absolutely devoted to his wife and family - a very different portrait from the one usually given of the autocratic czar. Recommended for anyone interested in the human side history.
review 2: So enjoyed meeting the girls as individuals, rather than just as the four sisters of the Tsarevitch Alexey! Also learned more about the family unit as well. Cannot say enough about this wonderfully informative tale of four completely different sisters...in looks as well as temperament and personality. Makes their tragic end all the more poignant now that I feel as if I really know them as individuals. less

A well written bio. I've read a few books on the subject. Nothing new was added.
