review 1: Herbie Hancock is one of my musical heroes. I devour numerous musical bios a year, and was looking forwards to hearing his story. For the most part, this is an enjoyable easy read. Almost too easy. For a guy who has written some incredibly famous music and worked with hundreds of artists, he just seems to breeze through it all. Even though he talks about challenging himself, you never feel the struggle or challenge emotionally through the writing. I will admit to saying that my favorite jazz autobios are the ones written by Miles Davis and Charles Mingus - both of whom had much darker periods. But even when Herbie goes through a dark period late in the book, it seems to get resolved fairly fast. It just seemed as if he is only ever letting us see the surface of his emotio... morens. However, it is clear that he has enthusiasm for all the music and musicians he has ever worked with, and that makes this book a lot of fun. His stories are great and I appreciate how he lets his sidemen contribute their own perspectives. The opening story of him playing a "wrong note" is fantastic and a great allegory to his approach on life. And his discussion about the fluidity of jazz and of the need to listen, react, act, all in the moment is worth the price of the book alone.
review 2: OH, I wish there was a 4.5 rating! I was only vaguely familiar with Herbie Hancock and his music. This bio fro Goodreads was written with Lisa Dickey and widened my world perspective. It's a great history of music, of the creativity behind music, and people in the entertainment world. I really believe everyone that takes a music appreciation course should read this book. Integral to the music is Mr. Hancock's own journey with music, the people who inspired and motivated him ( family, musicians, entertainers, managers). It also reflects his own personal journey with Buddhism and opening up to "Possibilities". less
