review 1: A good read in that HM tells his story with brutal honesty. Borders on self-flagellation at times. I found that after reading his explanation of the source for much of his comedy (to get a laugh for himself by making other people uncomfortable), I realized why I've never been a huge fan of HM as a comedian. I've never been terribly fond of "practical joke" type humor, especially the kind that's at the audience's expense. (Never liked Andy Kaufman either). But, I gotta hand it to Mr. Mandel for including stories about mean pranks he played on close friends, even when the reaction it leaves the reader with (at least, this reader) is: "What a dick!" I can't help but wonder if his OCD is somehow behind the self-punishing, confessional feel of these stories, especially as... more he apologizes but shows no real remorse for these tricks. He repeatedly blames his ADHD "impulsiveness” for these pranks. But, the way he continued on with some of them, even after seeing their devestating effect on his victim, just seems downright cruel. Cruelty is never funny. In fact, he open the book with an event in which he was treated cruelly because of his OCD (germophobia). Yet, by the end of the book, he shows little to no introspection as to how HIS victims must have felt. Hmmm.. I guess in the end I found this book to be about as shallow as his comedy.... Why am I surprised?
review 2: OMG this is the funniest book I've ever read, by far!! I remember stopping the book just to laugh. Laughing at when he was telling the story of when he took his young daughter to the mall and she had to go to the bathroom, he left the mall to go home. He doesn't make it stops the car along side the road, falls down a hill and she pees all over him. Holy shit the way he writes it.... Is brilliant! And hilarious!! less
