review 1: This book of short stories was written for queer youth. This author is also a storyteller, and she visits many high schools to tell her stories to increase sensitivity and to speak to teens who struggle to be true to themselves. Her writing deals with gender (which she says is a spectrum and not a binary) and identity and acceptance. It's a brave effort to try and help young adults embrace who they are, and to awaken all others to their valid existence.
review 2: 2.5 stars is more accurate. This book gave the impression that it was going to be about Coyote's experience growing up queer. While the beginning of this book is heavy with stories of her youth, most of them are not specific to the queer experience, and the ones later in the book are more about her
... moreimpact on other youth. Regardless of the fact that I thought this collection was a little weak, I really like Coyote, and will definitely be seeking out her other work. less
