review 1: I have never paid much attention to Marilyn Monroe's legacy. I've never seen any of her films and I'm not a fan. I found the book by chance and decided to read it anyway. This biography connects many incidents of Norma Jeane/Marilyn's life - from her childhood until the day of her untimely death. It goes in depth about Marilyn's acting skills, movies that she performed in and the many personal relationships she had; including friendships, working and romantic relationships. This also includes number of interesting photos of Marilyn. What I really found interesting in this was, her relationship with her mother, foster mother, and legal guardian. She seemed to have always depended too much on someone close to her (either a man or a women) to meet her emotional needs. However a... mores she was a women who suffered from mental instability, it didn't come as a surprise to me. I personally felt her depression might have increased with all the "method acting". I thought the book was interesting and believed it was well-researched until the author started to talk about "borderline paranoid schizophrenic" repeatedly. I'm not a psychiatrist but I doubt there has ever been such a diagnosis. Perhaps he meant Borderline Personality Disorder and Paranoid Schizophrenia? I don't know. Personally I don't like labeling and categorizing, I don't understand why people do it. The author tries to remove Monroe's label of a dumb blonde and labels her with a much stigmatized illness as Schizophrenia. Then I found more problems in this book. There were serious errors. At one point the author himself is confused about possible fathers of Marilyn Monroe. In a nutshell, the book was interesting and was an easy-read. Did I find any clues to "mysteries" of her life and death" ? No. And I'm not interested in them either. Was she a complex character? I don't think so. Rather, I think fans, or the readers in general wants her to be so. She, in the end to me, was another women who had a horrible childhood, tough life, problems with mental conditions to which she never got the suitable help. Perhaps the ONLY thing makes her unique is having to always wear a dramatic mask to public, since people are still obsessed with that mask - "Marilyn Monroe" persona, I think she was a fine actress and playing "Marilyn Monroe" might have been the her best performance.
review 2: Það er erfitt að gefa þessari bók einkunn. Ef ég myndi bara miða við upplýsingarnar sem komu fram þá er hún með nærri fimm stjörnur. Ef ég myndi miða við hvernig þessum upplýsingum er miðlað þá eru þetta í mesta lagi tvær stjörnur.Bókin er alltaf löng. Tíma lesandans er sóað ítrekað í endurtekningum og í að fjalla um smáatriði sem maður hefur engan áhuga á.Þetta er í raun keimlíkt hinni bókinni sem ég hef lesið eftir Taraborrelli. Sú var um Michael Jackson. Ég gat ekki mælt með henni og ég get ekki mælt með þessari. Nema augljóslega fyrir aðdáendur sem vilja fá smáatriðin.Varðandi Marilyn sjálfa þá var margt áhugavert. Hún er voðalega ýkt dæmi um svona stjörnu með sjálfseyðingarhvöt því hún var ekki bara að nota lyf og áfengi heldur virðist hún hafa verið með geðklofa og heyrði stundum raddir. Ég held að ég hafi fengið ágætis innsýn í persónuna með bókinni en ég hefði líklega getað fengið sömu innsýn með helmingi færri orðum. less
