review 1: I didn't think I would finish this book. It's a really long book and I didn't think her story would keep me interested. However, it did. Maybe it's because I didn't know anything about her or believed she was that important. After reading the book, I realized how much she meant to people at that time. The story of her and Kennedy's was also interesting. I guess the shocking part in the book were the vivid descriptions of Monroe's life in and out of the orphanage. I can see why she was insecure after being tossed about like an object. I really dislike Grace and did not feel emphatic towards her. In a lot of ways, she just thought about herself. Overall, that author wrote a vivid account of someone's whose life was filled with pain.
review 2: I did enjoy reading
... morethis book and getting more of an insight in to get childhood. However, I feel the author didn't explore points that stood out to me as being significant experiences that would have had an effect on who Norma Jean became. He appear very bias towards anyone's view who had given him material for the book and I believe when writing a biography there needs to be a neutral perspective given. At the start of the book when he is describing Norma Jean's start in life I felt the author was dismissive of the fact that Norma Jean was never allowed to call her foster mum, Ida, 'mom'. Yet the other children were. Norma had been in this woman's care from being a baby and had at this point known no other mother. What we understand now of mental abuse if children this is something that would have and obviously did have a profound effect on Norma Jean. But the author appeared dismissive as 'Ida did it as she thought it was to toughen Norma Jean up, as she could see she was a troubled child'. I feel the author was dismissive of most things and focused mainly on convincing the reader that anything controversial said of Marylyn life/love/affairs and her connections to the Kennedy's and the mafia were all fabricated and in the main Marilyn was just suffering with a mental illness. less

A great insight on the raw life of the sex symbol. Both tragic and heart wrenching.
