review 1: So, I've read "As Esganadas" by Jô Soares...Reading this book I've had the feeling that I've already read it. Then I realised that I've really read it before with another name "O Xangô de Baker Street" (A samba for Sherlock).Mr. Soares is back with a serial killer whose victims are innocent women in Brazil, just the same as in "Xangô".We have the musical references, the historical characters that make special appearences, the excellent but a little awkward detective.Jô Soares even borrows another character from a famous writer. In the first book was Sherlock Holmes (from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle), and in this book he borrows Esteves from a Fernando Pessoa's poem. The only difference that I could notice, and that I liked is that in this book we know the killer since the ... morefirst chapter. And in the remaining of the book we'll see the police and the murderer "dancing" around each other. The story is about a man that for Edidpian reasons (here is the psychologist in me talking) kills fat and beautiful women. The killer is not very selective about his victims, he kills whores, nuns and even a nazi agent...I've read the book in Portuguese once it was not translated to any other language yet. The publishing house (Companhia das Letras) made a beautiful book in yellow paper and large prints. One more thing before I go, Jô Soares is a very cult, educated and inteligent man, and sometimes he makes us remember that by writing about the reason for something or funny (but unnecessary) stories about facts or personalities in the Brazilian history.
