review 1: Heard some select portions of this in his Moth (and TAL?) pieces, so decided to get the book. Very interesting memoir about how he married a woman he was always fighting with and was a crazy free spirit type but also very domineering and eventually became the type to breastfeed their 4 and 6 year old sons and become militant about eating local and cooking your placenta and things like that. Nicely juxtaposed against the story about how his sister is dying in a hospice and his crazy family. If you've heard his stories, you will recognize the bits from the radio pieces, but they aren't exactly the same (he did a nice job condensing for the radio pieces). My only complaint is that I somehow expected more resolution in the end, which is insane, given that if you think about it... more, he seems the type to really hang in. Good, interesting, funny, ethereal not terribly heavy memoir.
review 2: The writing was slightly above par. The perspective is, as a married woman, depressing as all hell. I wish the light at the end of the tunnel he gave had been brighter...But its a memoir, and wouldn't it be lovely to rewrite all of these books to suit my fancy rather than tell a real story? That said, it was as engrossing as a car crash and gave me real pause in my own marital demeanor. Pause, not full stop. Worth a read. less

Wow, his wife is soooo over the top! Sometimes his stories were like nails on a chalkboard.

A few funny parts but altogether disjointed and disappointing
