review 1: I picked this book up because the cover caught my eye. The content, however, was both sad and scary. This book should come with trigger warnings for: child neglect, bullying, eating disorder (Asta is taught by her mother that eating very little is discipline, and that discipline pleases God). The fact that the first half or so bothered me so much is a testament to the author's talent. She writes very well and very vividly. The subject matter put me off quite a bit, but I kept with it because I wanted to see Asta and Orion with a happy ending, adopted into the same household. The ending wasn't happy, but it wasn't sad, either. It gave me the sense that the story was still on-going.This book would likely appeal to those who liked "Flowers in the Attic" and books of that na... moreture.
review 2: Asta and Orion got underneath my skin and lived there the whole time I was reading this book. It was a very different experience (for me, lately) to read about kids who had a hard life but did not talk about it emotionally. I guess I shouldn't say I enjoyed it, I know that isn't the word I'm looking for here but it was an enjoyable book. I liked the beginning where I was thrown into their world and I didn't look back until I turned the last page. less
