review 1: This book is not an autobiography. I think that's important to note. However, the book does detail in courageous detail the journey Janet Jackson had in finding her own "true you" and becoming comfortable in being Janet Jackson...not "Michael's little sister" or any of the other labels she wore along the way. I read the book in part because I wanted to know more about the Jackson family. However, as I began reading the book, I found that I could identify with Janet in so many ways, I soon lost sight of my interest in the family and found myself able to empathize with and learn from Janet Jackson's experiences with her battles with her weight, her struggle to accept herself "as is," yet striving to improve. I understood her feelings of not being accepted as she was, feeling... more awkward as she sought to find her own identity, and the difficulty of the journey toward accepting herself and recognizing her own intrinsic worth. I also appreciated her stories regarding her faith, and I was pleasantly surprised by her boldness in declaring Jesus as her Lord. She does it right in the beginning of the book, and carries it through to the end. It was inspiring. As a woman who has so much, she also has the potential to lose so much in being bold about her faith, yet she didn't waver. The entire book was all the more inspiring because of her boldness, her candor, and her genuine compassion for the reader. I recommend this book to anyone who even remotely enjoys Janet Jackson's work. Even if you aren't a fan of her music or movies, this book is sure to challenge and inspire. And, if you're wondering...yes, she does share many memories of Michael, and she is painfully honest about how his death continues to impact her life, how much she still aches with missing her brother, and that she still can't listen to his incredible music or watch his videos. So, all in all, this book encompasses just about anything you may be curious about regarding Ms. Jackson (if you're nasty), or Janet, while at the same time being a candid tale of her journey toward wholeness, wellness, and self-acceptance. It's a book that just about anyone could find inspiring in some regard, and I recommend to anyone who needs to be reminded that we are all miracles.
review 2: In College people told me I remind them of Janet, and after reading her book it seems we have more in common. For this reason the book hit home with me. I gained a lot from it. It's not an autobiography or memoir as some would think. It's actually a very light read covering a little of her struggles, short stories of other people (fans/friends) and a little from her nutritionist. As well, it's not filled with details of her personal life which I liked. That says a lot about her character. Go read a tabloid if you get bored. Her message, to be accepted as YOU are, is what it's about.. and I love the book mainly for that reason. less
