review 1: To say what I didn't' know about Jason Priestley, Beverly Hills 90210's only Canadian actor, could fill a book would be pretty accurate. It literally filled this book that I just read. Next to a few 90210 gossip tidbits here and there, I grew up knowing basically nothing about his life or career, and mostly typecasting him as Brandon Walsh, forever. I didn't know anything about his passion for race car driving (and his nearly-fatal accident), or his family's Terrace Beach Resort in Ucluelet, BC (road trip anyone?), or all of the truly talented people he was rubbing elbows with in his earlier days. This book was broken up into short one-or-two page essays that were easy to pick up and read anywhere. It had a bit of juicy 90210 gossip, but for the most part was pleasant... morely polite and Canadian.
review 2: 3.5 stars. Solid memoir, told in very short sections/chapters, which I like. He titles each section by location and zip code, to play off Beverly Hills 90210. I thought that was a clever/cute setup. Lots of interesting celebrity connections discussed, but no super juicy dirt and little drama. Jason reflects often that while he certainly appreciated the role of Brandon Walsh on BH 90210, he didn't like the way it typecasted him as the solid, somewhat boring, good guy. To me, the entire book is solid, good guy, writing - he speaks positively about 99% of anyone mentioned and even the few that he maybe isn't so keen on, he still phrases his stories and comments in a nice way. Very Brandon Walsh-like, so, irony? Overall, enjoyed it, great pictures inside. The cover photo is especially deliciously cheesy. less
