review 1: This book missed the mark for me. I was really excited when it came out for a read to review and I saw how many 5 star reviews it was given. Let me say, that this book was written well, but I had a problem with the plot from the start. I think what hindered it for me is I work for a school system. The misbehavior of the characters in this book at school and after school activities are real situations, but are portrayed in the wrong light. I know myself and the teachers I work with would never turn our heads to these types of behavior. I also know that some situations are not caught, and bulling and drug use are real issues, regardless, that took away from the book for me. May this plot was just to personal for me to give a nonbiased review.
review 2: There
... moreare some books that I just can't bring myself to finish. This one was one of them. Although, I enjoyed how overall realistic this was, the pacing was extremely slow. Following Spencer's thoughts were tedious, and I found that I could not even pay attention to the book at most times. I appreciate Warne's effort at making an intriguing and realistic story, but it lacked in action and other things I usually enjoy. The main reason I probably didn't enjoy this was because I don't particularly like realistic fiction. The topics addressed in this book, however, made me think more about other people around me, than myself. I sympathized with Spencer, and really appreciated how strong of a character he was, which is why I'm not giving this book 1 or 2 stars. less
