review 1: This book is a recounting of the author's travels on a personal pilgrimage to figure out his place in the church. He's a journalist as well. This combination of personal narrative and journalistic sensibility gives the book a bit of a whiplash feeling sometimes, as the author moves between interviews and his own experience frequently. However, he has interviewed everyone who's anyone in the debate/discussion on homosexuality in the church (from Westboro to MCC), finds some very interesting private stories of struggling to figure out what faithfulness looks like and quotes a lot from the Bible and Christian writings. All this together makes a strong book worth reading. The strongest part is the conclusion, where Chu prophetically calls the church to do better, be more ... moreloving and be more relevant to the concerns people have today. Even for those who feel burnt out on this issue or feel like their convictions are set in stone, reading this account is refreshing and challenging.
review 2: The first few chapters were nothing that hasn't been said before, and I began to wonder if there was anything to the book. And indeed I'm not sure that there's much in here at all that hasn't been said before, but as the book progressed it became clear that the value lies not in what Jeff Chu is saying, but in the way he's saying it. He really weaves everything together into a journey, one that's equally about cultural Christianity and religious faith. I wish he'd spent a bit more time talking about himself, followed by a meatier conclusion, but it's a great read for a wide audience regardless. less
