review 1: I read this book a couple years ago as a distraction from grad work, and I found it fascinating. I hadn't yet breached the world of tattooing, but Jeff's ability to story tell is spectacular. Even if you're hardcore anti-tattoo, you can't help but love Jeff's ability to bring the culture, atmosphere, and day-to-day "inked life" to the page. Imagery, superb writing, and anecdotal stories suck you in...and by the time you finish you have a newfound respect for tattoo artists.I'd completely forgotten about it until today, when I was in Sea Tramp for my third tattoo...so of course I came home and read it again. Knowing some of the people Jeff talks about, the atmosphere of the shop, and the spectacular work they do made this book even more spectacular the second time ar... moreound.
review 2: Absolutely loved this book. I don't even know what to say about it except that if you have any small interest in tattooing whatsoever than this should be the first book you pick up. You think you can be a tattoo artist? Think again. It's more than just being good at drawing a picture. Johnson has so many crazy almost unbelievable stories about the world of tattooing it'll make you second guess choosing this as a career option. Stay in school kids. less
