review 1: A little interesting, then it got tedious the way most blogs tend to get. The tips are rather silly but I can see the appeal I suppose. Good fluffy read if you want to unwind, might be revolutionary if you're of a particular type but it's same old quite a bit of a poncey aspiration-y lifestyle tosh toted out by authors who've lived rather sedate lives pre-awakening by all these wonderful cultures. Would love to read more about Madame Bohemienne and her wild parties. But it's about Madame Chic ah well.
review 2: I wanted to like this book after seeing it come through the local library but I have to say I was disappointed in the end. The first few chapters have wonderful tidbits on improving your eating habits (no snacking and guilt-free eating are big points), s
... moretaying fit through normal routines (gyms needn't be necessary - yes!, and overall simplifying your life (the 10-item wardrobe chapter had me cleaning out my closet that night). Sure, you can find these points elsewhere but they really were nice, bite-sized reminders. However, the book quickly turns to advice that can be summed up by turning time back to the 1950's housewife. I am not a feminist by any stretch and have next to no problems with that image, but it would be near impossible to achieve in American's modern society (not to mention that it's just not the way every woman wants to live life). Fashion tips that include buying expensive fabrics like cashmere and silk for everyday wear (and covering them with an apron while scrubbing the floor), seeking out weekly massages and manicures, and arranging your home to be uncomfortable so that you won't lounge in front of your own family: all of these tips are quite formal and suited for a very specific type of person. If you're not that person, you'll be doing what I did: skimming for the little reminders of keeping life simple, not worrying about what people think, and spicing up life with more beauty in the details. less
