review 1: An amazing story of a life-changing experience....This book tells the story of a horrible experience in Somalia. Two individuals, who were there to help children, were kidnapped, captured and held for exorbitant ransom. Jessica Buchanan and Poul Thirsted were taken captive while on a mission to help the children in an area that was considered to be dangerous. Their treatment by the kidnappers shows the inhumanity, selfishness and evil that permeates this culture. Jessica and her husband, Erik, speak in their own voices, telling of their thoughts and feelings during this time. The professionals in SEAL TEAM SIX came to Jessica’s and Poul’s rescue. However, their captivity lasted more than 3 months, during which time their captors spent a great deal of time chewing a pla... morent known as khat. The book is written in generally small chapters, and when Jessica or Erik is speaking, that part is identified, also. The small chapters make it easier reading for those with only small bits of time for reading. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn of the real culture in Somalia and to anyone who is considering living in a country other than the U.S.
review 2: I found this book extremely interesting, especially in the way the author's thoughts and feelings evolve regarding the situation. I liked that it was told more like a conversation (easy to read), although it would have also been great with more depth and description, like most novels. This book is truly Jessica's story -- she does not assume to know what others are thinking or why things happened the way they did -- she just tells it as it happened to her in a practical and brave way -- which also matches her demeanor. less
