review 1: Kind of a borderline four stars--3.5 would be more accurate, but alas, we have to have whole stars on here. Jimmy McDonough is clearly a fan of Tammy Wynette as he often inserts his opinions about this person or that person as Wynette's tumultuous life unfolds [the marriages, the drug abuse, the romantic abuse, the intense hunger to become a country singer, George "Possum" Jones!]. He even has letters written directly to Tammy before each major section of the book to prove his love and devotion to her. I have a bunch of records by Wynette and have always loved her stuff from the 1960s and 1970s. I can't stand her songs about kids though. Ugh. Her voice was tender, heartbreaking and rural even if she was gussied up a bit by producer Billy Sherrill [another character in Tamm... morey's life]. I didn't know much about her life and this did the trick for that. It also made me want to get out my music of hers and listen to it--and George's as well. Jones is indeed a bit of a devil, battling the booze and the drugs and himself nearly every step of the way. I do enjoy reading about ol' Possum, ha. I went to Amoeba when I finished this and bought George's "Nothin' Ever Hurt Me [Half as Bad as Losing You]", "A Picture of Me [Without You]" and "The Grand Tour" to get all depressed and lonesome when the mood strikes me. Dang, George Jones is a bad-ass country singer.
review 2: This was a pretty good read about the life and career of Tammy Wynette, one of the more memorable country singers of her time. She could have been the star of a "country soap opera" long before reality TV was even an idea. Multiple marriages (most notably to George Jones), illnesses, drug addiction, sometimes overshadowed her remarkable voice and talent and we are left to wonder what her life could have been if she had been able to overcome these issues. RIP Tammy! less

In the hands of a different author, I would have loved the book. This guy... Not so much.
