review 1: This was my first reading of this author.He definitely has the gift of telling stories,and in that sense, it was very interesting to learn about his life. He is one of those people who are chatty and open and conversational.However, overriding that enjoyable story, I found it very painful to read of his repeated disobedience and deception of his very religious parents - a lifetime of repeated and deliberate betrayals of the trust they placed in him.I suppose one might observe this as "entertaining," but for me it was a difficult story and one I desperately would not be true of my own children.
review 2: I loved this book. John Grogan is an excellent author. He can make the most banal, trivial events full of passion and excitement (not that there were any ban... moreal, trivial events in this book, just that he is an excellent author).I loved the family John grew up in and loved his love for his father, expecially as dad aged. They had a special relationship the stayed strong despite John's "bad boy" ways as a teenager.I'm not into dog books so have never read "Marley & Me" by John Grogan, but may give it a shot after reading this. less
