review 1: Aptly named, Map of My Heart is a window into the life and essence of John Porcellino. At times I felt like I must be intruding, for him to share things so personal with me... yet I am stuck with the fact that most of the details are left unsaid and un-drawn. Each issue in this collection of self published zines is a mess of simply drawn comics detailing equally simple events, letters from readers that tell stories with no apparent poignancy, short notes from John and little lists of things that inspire him. I think the brilliance of this work is the lack of meaning, lesson and direction. It's not that it doesn't exist, it's that it becomes the reader's responsibly to supply those things. In a way that is always the case with anything we read, watch, or listen to... Map of... more My heart just is honest about that fact.
review 2: So awesome to revisit all these past issues collected in a book. Funny to note which comics you remember and which ones you have no recollection of... And funny to note how the ones you remember read differently years later. It felt totally indulgent (in a good way!) to read through this slowly when I could have been doing other things. And, I LOVED seeing it on the "recently returned" display in the lobby of Central Library. (Not really GN or memoir like my shelves say, though I think the cases could be made.) less

Superb line and pace, ebb and flow. Essential reading alongside King Cat Classix...
