review 1: It took about 40 pages for me to get into the book, but once I did it was a lot of fun. I liked the tone of the narrator and love his "interogations" of each girl. The solution to the crime was neat and smart. I don't know if Porkpie has written other novels, but I'd be more than willing to give them a try if they are as funny and cool as this one was. It took only about 90 minutes to read, but is worth the time.
review 2: If this book's title alone doesn't pique your interest, perhaps a summary of its overall tone as "the Thin Man series, with gratuitous nudity" will do the trick. It's a murder mystery set in the world of modern NYC burlesque (of which the author is a star IRL), in which a mean dancer whom nobody liked drops dead onstage during a routine - doi
... moreng a faceplant into one of the cups of her shucked brassiere, no less - and the fictionalized version of Porkpie is forced to find out who's responsible. But the mystery angle is really more of an excuse for Porkpie-the-author to exercise his wit, which is considerable; he has a really strong, likable, funny authorial voice, with a finely-tuned ear for zingers. Pleasingly, he gives most of the best lines to the dancers themselves (my favorite of whom is Brioche a Tete, whose every line made me laugh like a drain; she's best described as Hannibal Lecter, if Hannibal Lecter were a naked burlesque dancer, and none of his metaphors made any sense whatsoever). You'll probably figure out who the killer is pretty early on, but when the journey's this much fun, who cares if you've already guessed the destination? This may be "the Burlesque Mayor of New York City"'s first literary outing, but I fervently hope it won't be the last. less

2 stars - style: blah, who-dunnit: obvious - but 1 extra for setting.

A good page turner, and the bonus of seeing a world with fresh eyes.
