review 1: What a wonderful true story. Dame Dench's talent, humor, empathy, i.e. her whole self is apparent in this wonderfully too story of her life, in particular her professional life. I laughed out loud while reading it as well as mourned with her the loss of her husband. I didn't know the extent of her career, nor did I know all of the plays about which she spoke. But, it doesn't matter. You just have to like learning about interesting people to love the book.
review 2: An extremely impersonal recounting of Judi's career. 99% of the book is "I started this play in this year and the director was lovely to work with. ... morele rather unemotional sentence, and about as much space is dedicated to any other personal relationships. But, it does provide an interesting insight into what snapshots of the working life of an actor can be like. I particularly enjoyed her ritual of steaming her voice, chanting "Hip-bath hip-bath" and drinking a phial of ginseng and royal jelly before going on stage. And there are some tips for actors at the end of it which were good too. less
