review 1: Written with panache and touches of sly humor, WORKING STIFF is an outstanding account of Dr Judy Melinek's fellowship in the New York City medical examiner's office. Though its vivid details are not for the faint of heart, Melinek's book captures the many ways a human can depart from this earth, and how members of her profession solve the puzzles of homicide, suicide and disease. The chapters on post-9/11 forensics are particularly well-done, capturing both the horror and emotion of the terrorist attacks and their aftermath. Highly recommended.

... moreminer in New York City in 2001 and 2002. She describes what doing an autopsy is like, then goes through a list of the main causes of death, illustrating those with interesting examples that came her way. At the end she describes her experience on September 11, 2001, and in the following weeks and months as her Medical Examiner's Office processed thousands of remains from the World Trade Center disaster. Through everything, Judy's narrative is interesting and even funny at times, and her work is described with humanity and compassion. less
