review 1: I will say this book was not at all what I expected, but I am so glad I decided to buy it and give it a chance. The books about a lady and her son who has autism and when she's about to lose hope that her son will ever be able to show 'love', they find a cat named Ben- and a beautiful friendship between a boy and a cat grows. It shows that there are some very wonderful people in this world that accept people for who they are and will do anything to help, and some people that really need to take a look at how they are. Since this is a true story, I hope the man who lived in the same neighborhood as Julia and her son reads this and realized how cruel he really was. I will admit that I teared up when Ben 'went missing' and a few times through the searches and I cried again wh... moreen they found him. I know we will never know what happened, and neither will they, but it's amazing how cats will end up in the strangest places. I would recommend this to any cat lover, or person who believes animals do make a difference
review 2: I read A Friend Like Ben after a close friend recommended me "cat books" - this was one of them. I'm a massive cat-lover as it is, I believe they're great companions and friends to us as human beings. I'm also a big fan of true stories, typically the ones about overcoming adversity and being strong in the face of darkness, etc.I really hoped I'd like A Friend Like Ben, as I thought it would contain everything I loved in a true cat story. Sadly though, I found Julia (the author) more annoying than inspiring. I felt most of the book was more about her struggles as the mother of an autistic child than about her cat, Ben. The only real part of the book that centres on Ben (or George) is when Ben goes missing, and even then Julia is the main "victim". I wish I liked this book more. less
