review 1: Call it 4.5/5 stars. Two things really struck me in this book. 1) Dr. J doesn't use the word "compulsion," or the abbreviation OCD, but it sure sounds to me like he has it. That was pretty interesting. 2) The game in Dr. J's day really was different from today's game. Reading this book was an enjoyable extended stroll down Memory Lane; I realized how much I miss the old game and dislike the new one (which is more like rugby or padless football).
review 2: I found this book fascinating, from his attitudes to habits to experiences and the way he saw himself. He doesn't mention that he was awarded an honorary doctorate (for dance!) but he alludes to his goal of making his playing elegant. His feelings for his mother, sister and younger brother are central in his li
... morefe. When he marries someone who doesn't like them, though, he honors the choice he made (his wife) and works to juggle things to please everyone as much as he can. He really is not arrogant at all, which is surprising, given his talent, his striving and overcoming of obstacles, and his success. He also taught me a lot about the playground game vs. the inside (court and rules) game. How they each shaped him is illuminating. His life included Jim Crow in the South, the Black Power Movement and the assassinations in the 60's. His response was unexpected. Worthwhile read, for greatness, grace and basketball's intersection in this one soaring man. less

A bit more humble-bragging than I wanted, but otherwise an enjoyable read.
