review 1: Dr. J by Julius Erving is a thought-provoking book that goes well beyond the scope of basketball. At the beginning, Julius is very childlike in his thoughts and actions, but the overall tone becomes more serious and adult-like. As the story progresses, the author learns valuable life lessons and addresses his many shortcomings and regrets. This novel talks about so much more than his love for basketball, which was interesting in its own right. Near the end, details and descriptions became more basic and shorter, but I think it gave a sense that the story was nearing an end. Overall this is a great book that delves deep into life's finer moments. 4/5 stars.
review 2: One of the most popular basketball players in the history of the game asserts in this frank auto... morebiography that he does not get that popularity completely. Physically gifted, he could dominate the playgrounds of Long Island and New York City and yet was a highly disciplined team player in college and the NBA. He struggles to communicate the joy he obviously felt playing basketball; luckily for fans they could see it every minute of every game. A main theme is the creativity he loved and displayed while scoring over 30,000 points; as one of the first players to make a move without knowing how it would end, his coaches had to adjust. This is also an attempt at honest self-appraisal athletically and personally, not an easy task for a high-profile, highly paid professional athlete in the 1970s and 80s. less
