review 1: Kamal recounts his early life when his family is displaced from Yemen due to political change. Over the years the family moves from Cairo to Beirut and back to Yemen because of the political climate. His family goes from having many freedoms to few while Kamal escapes his past and so he can live openly as a gay man to Britain, then Canada. A story of much strife, questions of identity and losing and reclaiming a family.
review 2: This is the story of Kamal Al-Solaylee and his family, from the time of his birth as the last of eleven children in Aden, Yemen, to his arrival in Toronto where he currently works as a professor of journalism. ... moreife in prosperous Toronto is compared to the deteriorating life his family leads in Yemen. An illuminating and fascinating look at the middle east that we would never otherwise have a chance to see. We go deep inside the turmoil in the author's mind as he comes to terms with his family and distance and his new gay life in Canada. I highly recommend reading this terrific book! less
