review 1: I liked this book for unexpected reasons. It was disappointing in its "insider" account of Clinton's work as Secretary of State. It really didn't go much beyond what was in the mainstream press. And Ghattas was annoying in her descriptions of Clinton's outfits and her fawning over Hillary all the time. However, I did enjoy seeing that folks all over the world really seem to love Hillary. And the unexpected bonus was the theme, running through the entire book, of how other countries view the U.S. As a young person in Lebanon, Ghattas joined many of those around her in thinking that the U.S. controlled events all over the world, and that if it wanted to, the U.S. could solve most countries' problems. As she followed State Department officials around the world, she learned th... moreat the U.S. is not omnipotent and that American officials are constantly balancing competing interests, desperate pleas for help, and true crises.
review 2: The Secretary covers Kim Ghattas's travels with Hillary Clinton as part of the traveling press corps during Clinton's tenure as Secretary of State, framed by the author's own experiences growing up in Lebanon. For each stop, Ghattas relays her experiences, the Secretary's purpose, and background on the countries visited. I loved the context that the author provides by describing her childhood in a war-torn country looking to the US for help, and how she comes to understand that differently as an adult. This book is at least as much about American foreign policy from 2008-2012 as it is about Hillary Clinton, and it definitely opened my eyes to events and issues that I have not paid a lot of attention to. less

I'm almost done. Very interesting to see how others see America as both good guy and bully.

I enjoyed this book but agree with what other readers said about it being too detailed.
